Five Broken Blades by Mai Corland

2.5/5 ⭐️

Unfortunately, this book was a disappointment.

Marketed as this high-stakes heist of sorts, pulling together a band of dangerous 20-somethings, the execution couldn't be further from the blurb.

Instead of these cunning adults, we get what amounts to 6 horny teenagers that can't get past their primal urges.

What is worse, since we get in the head of each and every one of them, their thoughts and reasonings, turns out, are extremely shallow. Having these tense and intricate backstories, you'd expect complex characters, dealing with a plethora of complicated feelings and motives. Yet, what we are left with, amounts to this for the first HALF of the book:

He's so casually strong. And the way he took on the pirates, the way he killed to protect me, was... something.
I cross my legs. It isn't wet-undergarments time. And I probably shouldn't be turned on by unflinching murder. But "shouldn't" is meaningless. It's not the same as "won't."

Or Royo mentally explaining what a courtesan was for half a page.
