A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray

5.0

One-Sentence Summary: Gemma is barely making it after her mother is murdered in the middle of an Indian market, then she's shipped off to a boarding school in London where she must face mean girls and premonitions.

Time/Setting: Victorian-era London.

Review: I see you, Libba Bray. There were quite a few things that I enjoyed about this novel, but I think the one thing that I enjoyed the most is how much it reminded me of the movie The Craft. (If you don’t know what that movie is about, please go watch it.) I appreciated the mean girl aspect. It made it better once the girls got a different place with one another. I also enjoyed the fact that there was no LOVE in this book. Lust? Absolutely. Jealousy? Hell yeah. But love? Nah. No time for the bull, we got other things to think about, like, power, greed, and witchcraft. I will say that towards the end Gemma got on my nerves; I personally would’ve jumped ship, but that’s just me. I definitely see her becoming a stronger character over the course of the next two books. I just hope the final ending doesn’t disappoint.

Favorite Character: Gemma, by default. We see more of her character than any of the other girls.

Least Favorite Character: Hm. I feel like Felicity is just going to go overboard again. Ann’s character is extremely weak, though.

Favorite Quote: "You can never really know someone completely. That's why it's the most terrifying thing in the world, really—taking someone on faith, hoping they'll take you on faith, too. It's such a precarious balance, it's a wonder we do it at all. And yet..." (p.397)

Recommend?: Yes, looking forward to the reading the next one in the series…whenever that may be lol

Re-read?: It’s possible.

Recap:
Spoiler Gemma found out that her mother was Mary Dowd, and Mary killed a little girl back when she was in boarding school. Sarah didn’t die in the fire, she is now the dreaded Circe. Pippa decides to stay in the realm and die in the real world, instead of marrying the dreaded Mr. Bumble. No clue what happens to Felicity and Ann; they kinda fell off.
