Selected Poems of Emily Dickinson - Emily Dickinson [Dover Thrift Editions] by Emily Dickinson

hopeful inspiring lighthearted reflective relaxing fast-paced

5.0

Usually poetry books need some time to digest. You sit with it, ponder, let the words wash over you in order to understand its meanings. And yes, this book would've been better if I had taken my time reading it but her words were so fresh, so delightful, it was like digesting liquid.

I could see some similarities between her works and mine, that sometimes I felt like a voice inside me goes "oh, hi!" As if greeting an old friend. We've ran through the moors together one time. We knew each other once.

Her works speak of various subjects; life and death, love and marriages, womanhood. I love that she included nature imageries and used crystals in her writings.

And here are several favourite lines from this collection:

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul

Good-by to the life I used to live,
And the world I used to know;
And kiss the hills for me, just once;
Now I am ready to go!

How dreary to be somebody!

They dropped like flakes, they dropped like stars,
Like petals from a rose

The wind tapped like a tired man

This is my letter to the world,
That never wrote to me

I'm glad I picked up this book, I had so many favourite pieces and I'd love to pick it up again someday. Reading this tonight felt like bumping into a stranger and immediately liking them, knowing you'd be friends for a lifetime.
