Rustic Hearts by Amber Kelly
4.0
I loved this book but it also annoyed me a hell lot. It gave me The Simple Wild vibes.
Sophie’s mother moved both of them to New York City when Sophie was 12years old out of nowhere without letting Sophie say goodbye to her dad. 20 years later, Sophie’s grandmother died and her aunt called her so that she will come back for the funeral and will reading. Sophie is hurt by her Dad’s silence all those years and he didn’t even try to reach out to contact her. He remarried and took in his wife’ nephew and niece in and raised them. So Sophie feels that he replaced her with them and is rightfully hurt. When she reaches the small town, she is picked up by Braxton (the new wife’s nephew) and he judges her for her outfit and heels and is an asshole to her.
Oh god the reunion scene hurt so much and was emotional. Her Dad didn’t even say much to her. When she went to enter her old bedroom, she was shocked to see that her room is now Elle’s. She thought that her old room would still be intact if they “missed her” as much as she “missed them”. She felt replaced once again.
Obviously there is a secret about the day she left that her mother didn’t tell her. It was kind of annoying how they dragged it out till the will reading. I knew that the secret would paint her Dad as an angel who was misunderstood all those years. She forgave her Dad immediately after learning the truth. Her mother arrived when Sophie was talking to her Dad because the Dad called her. The mother was a blubbering mess because she lied to her daughter for 20 years. And she forgave her mother so easily. I would be so freaking mad being lied to for 20 years. Even the end was unrealistic with her mother coming to visit to help prepare for the wedding. When the mother couldn’t even stand the small town and wanted to get away so badly she CHEATED on her husband with a director who promised to make her a star. So you expect to believe that she visits the small town now and is WELCOME!!!?? Yeah sorry I wouldn’t even associate with that bitch. Plus, it seems that the mother loved Sophie so much and did everything so Sophie would stay with her. Then we find out that the mother leaves Sophie every Holiday (thanksgiving and x-mas) to spend it in the Bahamas with her rich hubby. Yeah fuck off. The mother didn’t love Sophie one bit and was just a selfish bitch.
I felt that Sophie’s romance with Braxton wasn’t the focus of this book. I hated the Braxton slept with another woman at 30%. It felt icky to me. Sophie witnesses his hookup Lori leave his house at like 5 am and she kissed him goodbye. I really felt that scene was unnecessary because it added nothing to the story.
