The book was fine. It wasn't a breakaway success. It wasn't bad. It was fine.
Minor trigger warning: this book gets pretty close to monster smut. If that's an issue for you or something you don't enjoy, this one might be the one to skip.
I liked how generational trauma was discussed in this book. I thought it was an interesting premise and was handled well given the overall whimsical tone of the book. I liked how the author also tackled family dynamics, friendships, and personal sacrifice. There were multiple complicated situations, and they were well written.
I will say that the climactic scene at the end and the big "reveal/fix" was pretty thin and didn't have the emotional punch I think it was aiming for. The conflict that led to it wasn't enough to justify the finale in my opinion.
This was a great book to read while traveling. It passed the time. It kept me entertained. It didn't require singular focus to follow the plot.
