Fearing the Black Body: The Racial Origins of Fat Phobia by Sabrina Strings

4.0

You know when they say ignorance is bliss...? Charles Dana Gibson, Albrecht Dürer, Peter Paul Rubens, and Ralph Waldo Emerson have been ruined for me now knowing their shitty beliefs on race theory and/or eugenics. Very upsetting that awesome painters, illustrators and poets were such crappy people.

Aside from that- the real review on the book is that I THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE DIFFERENT! This book is SUPER dry and reads more like a dry history textbook. I listened to the audiobook and I got through it, but it was super dry. I also was surprised that almost 60% of the book is prior to the 1900's.

This is a very thorough book on how racism, the patriarchy, and good old white supremacy shaped our medical system and how we treat fat bodies and "health" surrounding one's weight. We all knew that Galton and Kellogg would be involved right?
