I'm not a huge Peter Pan fan to begin with but was willing to give this one a try because I am a fan of surfers.
I think the biggest issue (for me) with a retelling is, if it's too close to the original then I already know exactly what happens so why read it? That's how I feel about Second Star unfortunately.
While it IS fast paced and somewhat entertaining, the characters felt too similar to the originals, right down to their names. I wanted to be surprised or wowed and I just wasn't.
