The Turn of the Screw by Henry James
2.0

This book isn’t awful, by any means. Admittedly, I picked it up only after discovering that The Haunting of Bly Manor is, in part, based on it.

But it’s LOSELY based on it at best.

Frankly, there’s hardly enough substance in the book to set up even the premiere episode of Bly. One thing I find that the book does as well as the show is that it sets up a tense atmosphere with characters that seem intriguing and complex.

The praise ends there, I’m afraid. Even as a product of its time, the novella is unnecessarily verbose. It’s as if James worked overtime to show off his superior talent and knowledge of words and how to string them together in the most complex, puzzling ways.

I found myself rolling my eyes and screaming MY GOD GET TO THE POINT quite often as I struggled through this one. I don’t see this particular classic as one I’ll ever feel the need to revisit.

Just watch the show. You’ll get this book and several of James’s other (measurably more entertaining) stories all rolled into one (decidedly more cohesive) narrative.
