The Passion of New Eve by Angela Carter

3.0

This is a book all about perception, about the image society forces women to conform to. What is beauty? What is femininity? Masculinity? I enjoyed the ways in which Carter explored mirrors and reflections and the expectations we're compelled to accept when it comes to desirability. Carter stated that she believed her books were political, and The Passion of New Eve most definitely is. I don't know whether I particularly enjoyed it, but it was a fascinating read and one that, despite its faults—trigger warnings for sexual assault, racism, and a ton of other things, plus a narrative that spiraled toward the end—has value.
