I liked all the inserts with real-life quotes and images from the civil rights movement. It's different, it makes the large book read more quickly, and it brings the events of the novel to life. It's the second in a series, but I wasn't lost even though I haven't read the first one. I had trouble getting into the actual story, though. For some reason I couldn't connect to Sunny. Though she deals with some big family issues, I was more interested in the lives of the Freedom Summer workers and wanted more about them. Also, I felt that it was just too long. Even with the inserts, it felt like it took a quite a while to get through. There wasn't enough action to keep me interested for such a long time.
