Next Year in Havana
by Chanel Cleeton
I read this book a couple years ago, but it pops into my mind quite frequently and is one I’ve recommended to absolutely everyone who will listen. A story of two women of different generations falling in love both with and in the city of Havana, Cuba, Chanel Cleeton paints such a beautiful portrait of the war-torn city. Her vivid writing put me right in the center of the story and made me feel as if I was watching it all playing out on a big screen.
The plot, weaving between a woman forced to leave the homeland she loves during the war and her granddaughter as she visits her ancestral land for the first time, kept me hooked with every page turn. Like I said, I still find myself thinking back to it two years later. It’s the perfect beach/pool read, but also the perfect read anytime you need a little escape.
