Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
5.0

Considering how short it is, there's a lot to get out of this novella. I enjoyed the relationship between Jekyll and Hyde as well as the psychological insights that seem ahead of their time. The novella reacts to concerns of its time in interesting ways and shows that it does no good to ignore the darker parts of humanity. Jekyll can never be whole again because he has cut off a part of himself rather than accepting human nature and grappling with his own responsibility. Like most people, the big reveal at the end was spoiled for me long before I ever read the book, but it was still rewarding to see how the story would unfold and the pieces fit together in light of the ending. The edition I read included Stevenson's "A Chapter on Dreams," which I really enjoyed as it helped enhance my appreciation of his writing. Since I have been interested in the Gothic for a while, I'm happy to experience this story in its original form at last. I'm glad that the Brownies gifted us with this dark little morsel. :)
