Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell

3.0

It's a cute, quick, straightforward read with a clunky start that I guess really only warms up somewhere around the middle. (Although, eh... for some reason most of the exposition in the comic felt unnatural? Like, it felt like the characters were expositing during dialogue, not... having a conversation.) But again - it's cute. I think I finished the book feeling the most attached to the pumpkin patch.

I can't put my finger on it, but for some reason in all of the Rainbow Rowell books I've read,
SpoilerI feel like the romance just... ambushes you. Like, she lays down good friendship and whatever, and then WHAMMO they kiss. Wha? Huh? I REALLY can't put my finger on it, I can't understand why Rowell's work in particular feels like this for me, and this is the same case with Pumpkinheads. Like I figured she was building up to a romance with all of Deja's hints, but when they kissed I was like... "AIGHT?? OKAY?? where did that come from"
