Life Ceremony by Sayaka Murata

4.0

Murata never disappoints. Having read both "Earthlings" and "Convenience Store Woman", I was excited to read this short story collection. Similar to the other books, she curiously looks at norms and morals in society and challenges it with absurd, yet interesting scenarios. What if we used corpses to create furniture? What if we ate the deceased at a funeral? Among other wild premises that she manages to write so well. As a woman, I adore seeing strange women depicted - women who do not fit into society's norms of how a daughter should act, how a wife should act, etc. I really hope to see more of her work translated to English in the future, as I am desperately craving more of her addicting weirdness
