A personal favourite book. Bulgakov’s narration grips the reader from the very first line. As each eclectic character is introduced the plot becomes more intriguing.

There is a focus on philosophy and religion, particularly the tale of Pontias Pilate and the crucifixion of Jesus, but it all serves a purpose within the narrative.

For the question are the characters loveable I answered ‘it’s complicated’, mainly because I didn’t feel the need to find them loveable. The schemes pulled by the characters don’t particularly endear them to the reader, but you keep reading because you are still interested in them anyway.
