Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

3.0

This is my second Sylvia Moreno-Garcia book and I mildly enjoyed it. I felt it was lacking the twists and turns, the intrigue and appeal of Mexican Gothic (which is one of my favourite books of all time) but one can definitely identify Garcia's spellbinding prose, strong heroines and strong imagery in this book too.

It's inspired by Mayan mythology something that isn't common and really deserves praise of its own. It's a sweet coming-of-age story that, even if it manages to distinguish itself among others, it's still really flat and lacks in anticipation. The star-crossed lovers also was a delight for me to read (as it's my favorite) but I understand if, for others, it's cliched.

I will definitely read many more of the author's books as I love her writing but this just missed the mark a bit for me.
