The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon
3.75
adventurous dark mysterious tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Diverse cast of characters: Yes

Super Intriguing world building, a mix of dystopian and fantasy. There are a lot of confusing terms though, so it was hard to understand at times. I kept reading more-so to learn more about the world, I wasn’t as curious about the characters. I would have loved to get a sneak peek at the warden’s pov at some point in the book, we only ever hear about things from Paige’s (our FMC’s) pov. One annoying quality about the book was that (personally) I found it hard at times to imagine the characters involved in the book. I wished there were more descriptors for Paige and her companions, we got crumbs here and there but it was hard for me to picture her clearly in my head 😅. The side characters are definitely there, but the story is mostly focused on Paige and her fight for survival.
Also, I wish the tid-bit of romance were handled a bit better, I.e I wish there was more build-up. I would honestly have been more satisfied with a slower burn. While I expected something to be brewing between the FMC & MMC,  I was surprised the author had them kiss towards the end of the book, it felt a little out of place tbh. It wasn’t horrible by any means, just a tad underwhelming/disappointing. I love a good enemies-to-lovers, so I ate up the beginning when Paige despised the warden (for good reason 🤷‍♀️) I get why she decided to open up but I wouldn’t have minded her despising him a bit longer.
The end is not really a cliffhanger, but it leaves a lot of things to be resolved and you’re left wondering how everything will be resolved. Overall, the series has a lot of potential, though the length of the series as a whole is a lot (7 planned books).
