A note on diversity: the characters in Gideon the Ninth are vastly different in terms of personality and motivations, but as far as I am aware, they are all white.
It’s early into the year, but I think this might be one of my favorite reads of 2023. It took a second for me to fully get into the world of Gideon the Ninth, partially because I think it was lacking some explicit world building, but pretty soon I was absolutely flying through pages.
Gideon’s perspective is hilarious (I’m a BIG fan of snarky narrators), and paired with Harrowhark’s serious and sometimes downright dreary disposition, it makes for an entertaining pair. I’ve marked so many pages for Gideon’s one-liners alone. “he gave her turbo cancer” nearly made me scream .
If you’re thinking about reading this book, go ahead and pick it up. You won’t regret it.
