Violeta by Isabel Allende
5.0
my second five star read of 2022!!
initial thoughts:
wow. i’ve been looking for a book to completely sweep me up in its flow and that is exactly what this novel did. isabel allende is such a compelling storyteller, and i absolutely loved the form of a hundred-year old lady reflecting on the numerous events of her life and the contexts in which they took place. despite its somewhat distant tone due to a mix of elderly acceptance and muted nostalgia, the prose was absorbing and just beautiful to read. all of the characters were three-dimensional and all of the themes, from politics and conflict to war and grief were examined in such detail. i have learnt so much from this book, not only of 20th century south america, but of humanity too. this will not be my last allende novel, that’s for sure
