The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison

5.0

“We courted death in order to call ourselves brave, and hid like thieves from life.”

I’ve never read a book so troubling yet moving. Morrison’s novel made me angry, uncomfortable, self-aware, depressed, enlightened, repulsed and so many other emotions. It was like watching an accident; I just could not tear my eyes away. I had to keep reading…

Morrison’s command of language is just brilliant. The figurative language, extended metaphors, imagery, allusions, subtext, etc were so edifying. What a tragically beautiful novel. The lessons that I took away from the novel will stay with me for a very long time.

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to read a Toni Morrison novel, but I look forward to reading her entire collection!
