The Beautiful and Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald
3.0

So like here's the deal with classics like Fitzgerald. They are a /trip/ to read, because like... Fitzgerald himself is just such a specimen, you know? Not a great guy. And then, he writes this beautiful story about how wealth, beauty, temporary happiness and status can fade to nothing in a heartbeat, and the temptation of "just enjoying life". There's some so fun themes unpacked in it, but the thing IS, this isn't like a "man who learned better" story, it's just....a man who 'learned' but then just drank his problems away. This isn't a story with main characters you adore.

So yes, I really like Fitzgerald's stories, I'd recommend them to any lover of classics, but just know going in that....the main characters are /so obnoxious/. At time's they are hilariously obnoxious, or they say such emotionally abusive, manipulative, or sexist things to eachother that I don't know how to react. That being said...isn't that just the dark side of humanity?
