These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong

5.0

Chloe Gong really took “a plague on both your houses” and ran with it. guys, I can’t shut up about this book. like to both booksta and real life friends. you ever hit yourself in the face with a book because you’re physically reacting to the story? that was me by the end of this one.

yes, it’s a retelling of Romeo and Juliet (with a very light touch!). but it’s also about power and identity and imperialism. it approached heavy topics in a both interesting and realistic way. the middle was a little slow but I was never bored, just anxious for answers. now I’m just anxious for the second book.

read if you like historical fiction not focused on white people, light fantasy, angst, or books generally tbh (with the caveat that there is a contagion aspect which given the state of the world might be triggering)
