The Haunting of Tram Car 015 by P. Djèlí Clark

5.0

I loved this novella. I was already familiar with the world -- set in a magical Cairo around 1912 or so where djinn and other supernatural entities live alongside humans -- from Clark's A Dead Djinn in Cairo.
This novella has, of course, a haunting at the heart of its plot. What I loved most, though, was the great detective duo from the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities -- told from the perspective of an older, more seasoned detective who's just begun working with a younger, newer partner. The two are so different, they really come alive as characters very quickly, and their relationship develops over the course of the story despite its relatively short length. The cast of secondary characters is interesting as well, as is the social / political context for the story. I would love to read another story in the adventures of Agents Hamed and Onsi.
