The Secret Horses of Briar Hill by Megan Shepherd

5.0

This one belongs with the classics. Such a poignant and beautiful read. I devoured this story very quickly. Emmaline's experiences are both heartbreaking and hopeful...it's so interesting to read from her perspective and remember that she is seeing and experiencing the world through a child's eyes. This is a middle-grade novel, obviously, but I think it takes a more mature reader, perhaps one who has experienced death, to appreciate the allegorical nature of Emmaline's winged horses.

All in all, this is a book I most certainly will read again (and that doesn't happen often). It's such a simple story, with memorable characters and an extremely simple plot. But from these simplistic elements, we get a tale that is nuanced and complex and overall a beautiful journey into the tragic world of a child living with an illness during a woeful time in world history.
