My Year of Rest and Relaxation had to have been majorly inspired by this book. Anna Morgan is OG ‘girl opting out of society’. Have many mixed feelings on this book but overall I think I liked it a lot. Def the kind of book that takes some extra thinking to appreciate it. Very much a novel of modernism so the writing can be a bit funky which I kind of love. A more impactful and complicated novel when paired with Anne Cunningham’s essay: “‘Get on or Get Out’: Failure and Negative Femininity in Jean Rhys’s Voyage in the Dark.” Is Anna’s refusal to get her life going actually an act of feminism? Anyway poor girl would’ve loved SSRIs and social media nostalgia.
