Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin A. Abbott

FLATLAND: A ROMANCE OF MANY DIMENSIONS by Edwin A. Abbott. This is a quick read (I have the Dover Thrift edition and it's under a hundred pages). The plot centers around a square (an actual square: four corners, four sides) who lives in a a 2-dimensional society wherein the more sides you have, the higher your rank (triangles are at the bottom, circles are at the top, as it is believed they have too many sides to decipher). The square in question discovers the existence of the third dimension, and is condemned as a heretic. Basically it's a story that explains the basics of geometry, and while that sounds like it should have no right to be fun and interesting, I really liked it. In fact, my only gripe is that I wish there was more: almost the entirety of the book is world-building, the plot doesn't really come in until the end.
