Destroyed by Eva Dresden
5.0

I'm simultaneous floating though empty space, devoid of all sensation and standing in the middle of a riotous explosion of colour and emotion.

If you’ve got this far, in the trilogy, then you know just what to expect … or do you? This is written with the same unique voice that characterised both Broken and Damaged. Eva Dresden's writing is akin to a complex symphony, one where the full orchestra is playing a multitude of notes that blend into one harmonious tune. However to experience the subtle nuances of tone and texture that each individual instrument brings you have to listen carefully. You have to focus and tease apart the various sounds until you identify the core of the music. And in the same way I found myself re-reading some paragraphs and phrases in order to truly appreciate and value the depth and meaning of them.

She felt alive. On fire and alight in the night dark sky, another star among the heavens. Soaring through a tempest raging around her.

I'm normally a quick reader, more concerned with taking in the overall shape and look of the masterpiece, but that isn't possible with this book. That would lead to me missing the delicate touches of colour, the subtle shades and tones, the careful brushstrokes that build layer upon layer in order to create an image so powerful that it leaves one speechless. To fully appreciate the sophisticated and intricate imagery created by the author's powerful writing, I found myself having to slow myself down and concentrate, and yet not once did I feel irritated by having to do this. At no point did I feel aggrieved that I had to read a sentence again, the reason being that it wasn't due to poor writing. In fact, quite the opposite is true. The writing is so wondrous that it deserves, nay demands, attention be paid to it.

I loved that neither character ‘lost’ anything of who they truly were, whilst at the same time managing to both grew and adapted. To our eyes Tobias' treatment of Quinn was horrendous when he first took her, and it only got worse. However not only was it part of how their world works, but he did eventually earn his forgiveness. Quinn stayed strong in her fight to retain a sense of self, though she did hover on the edge of weakness on other matters.

She believed what he said. Knew that he would rip this city apart if anything should happen to them. There was something to that, an emotion she didn't want to give close inspection. It was hot, volatile ... comforting.

Tobias, pig-headed alpha male that he is, thought burning the world to the ground should have been enough for Quinn to understand her place, her importance, in his life. However, to Quinn, all it made her feel like was a possession not a person. All she desired was to be listened to. Tobias tries his best to show Quinn how he feels but, in a society where an Alpha's feelings are a weakness to be exploited, it isn't always as easy as it sounds.

"Then you cry for me, Quinn. You let it out where I can't."
Holding her all the tighter, Tobias tucked the blankets closer and smoothed his palme over her har.
Cradling her as she sobbed his sorrow out for him.

As a ruling Alpha, Tobias', and therefore his family's, lives are constantly at risk. However the true source of that peril came from an unexpected quarter. It wasn't a total surprise, since the author heavily foreshadows the culprit, but I was surprised that we didn't see the return of a more familiar face. I liked that some loose ends were left to our own imaginations to complete, that reasons and explanations for past events weren't always interlinked, that there were many enemies, not just one.

I loved that Tobias didn't change how he did business, or what business he did. His position and power did not allow him to become some soft, caring do-gooder. To keep Quinn, Adam and Elise safe he HAD to be the bad guy, there was no choice in his continuing to rule with violence and terror. I loved that Quinn loved him despite this, and that with Quinn, he could be the man she needed and deserved.
