This one was out of my comfort zone in several ways, and I’m having a hard time settling on a rating. But I enjoyed it, and I’m thankful that Book Huddle made me read it this month!
What I loved:
- The cover
- The writing style
- The illustrations (they would be worth reading this one rather than listening)
What didn’t quite work for me:
- I just don’t love YA much anymore. It’s me, not the book. But I struggled to relate with any of the characters, and most of what they’re going through (other than, you know, fighting monsters in the woods) is just not relatable to me anymore.
I would describe this as dark and gruesome, but not necessarily “scary.” If you think you’d be interested in a YA, dark academia, macabre story with heavy themes of exploring sexuality, this one could be a great pick!
VAGUE SPOILER BELOW ⚠️
I guessed the “twist” quite a ways before the reveal, but the climax made me question my own understanding. I liked how it put me in Andrew’s shoes.
