“This is our life. We get to decide the rules. We get to say what goes and what stays, what matters and what doesn’t.”
“It was his damn fool heart. Ever optimistic, always looking for a sliver of sunshine in a sky clotted with thunderclouds.”
“There was something about people who were that secure; they made you feel better about yourself, like they accepted you for everything you were, imperfections and all.”
There was something SO sweet about this novel. I haven't read a lot of contemporary Young Adult lately but this one was well worth it. I made some TBR jars so that I could read some books that have just been sitting for a while. This was one of the ones that I picked for May and, boy, am I glad I did. I knew I had this on my shelf for a reason.
Dimple and Rishi are so stinkin' cute together. Menon really captures that first love feeling so well. My largest critique is how insta-love it felt. They say they love each other after 3 weeks! Maybe I was jaded but even as a teenager, I was never that sure of anything after just a few weeks, let alone a boy. However, both the main characters were utterly charming. I loved how important their Indian culture was to the plot.
The writing was solid and easy to fall into. I found myself thinking about Dimple and Rishi when I wasn't reading, wondering how they were gonna end up so definitely compelling. I think I liked it enough to even pick up the other two books in the series. I'd love to read more of Menon's writing!
