Girl A by Abigail Dean
2.0

A three star might be too generous but I rounded up due to the fact that my interest was peaked enough to want to finish the book to see how it ended. It however, did not deliver. I chose this as a February BOTM choice based on a review that it was similar to Gillian Flynn's Sharp Objects, but it was nothing like that. The writing in this book was disjointed. The chapters, even though focused on each sibling, was still mostly about Girl A and hopped between multiple timelines so much that it was hard to keep track of what she was going on about. There were moments where the author wrote completely raunchy sentences that seemed to be thrown in to add some shock value but only added to my growing dislike of the book. I remember a similar story from the news years ago which I'm assuming this story may have been inspired by. The things the real life children and the fictional ones went through at the hands of their parents, we're grotesque and awful. However, the novel fell flat to me in actually addressing any real issues. It could have gone some much deeper and been a phenomal story. Also, the author eluded to multiple things but never came out and answered any of the questions that presented so I finished the book feeling like I had wasted my time. I'm going back to drop the 3rd star because it is indeed too generous.
