Probably my favorite of the trilogy- for several reasons. First, the female protagonist is 43, the male protagonist is 32. This is an unheard of dynamic in regency romances. Second, the female is a widow who wants to revel in their freedom- enjoy everything, relish every experience, have no timetables. Which she absolutely deserves after raising 3 children into adulthood. I love how much life and full-human hood she gave to a MOTHER character. Third, the male protagonist wants a family and has a hard time separating sex from wanting a deeper emotional relationship. This is a level of emotional complexity that male romance characters are rarely given. I personally think it’s more common than is given space for. And finally, the main conflict of the book is that the male character has to learn to have that romantic relationship without a wedding ring, as the female character refuses to get married again.

What I love most about Leigh is the sex never ends with having babies. She fully writes into the idea that sex can just be for pleasure. Also, for regency time period- she has the intimacy placed in a variety of places, positions, dynamics, and public spaces. So if you love regency romance, but tire of the missionary position - Leigh’s your author.

But most of all- the female character left me feeling “didn’t I use to be like that?” With two kids of my own, I want to be her again. I want to be this character.
