Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang
- Strong character development? No
- Loveable characters? No
2.0
I was not a fan of this book. I absolutely hated Sciona. I kept thinking that she would get better and that major character development would take place, but if anything she got even worse once she learned the big secret. Her only redeeming quality was that she died at the end. A nice little divergent moment there.
Thomil was decent, though. I liked his small short parts. Too bad he couldn’t have gotten some back and forth narration throughout the entire thing.
I had a thought towards the end while reading this- is this supposed to be a commentary on the use and danger of using AI? Or really technology in general. At work as part of a green initiative we’re encouraged to only save meeting recordings, emails, files, etc if they are truly needed. To not save stuff just because we can… because all of that data isn’t being stored in thin air and space like so many of us imagine “the cloud”. It has physical footprint and an ecological cost to house it. The carbon footprint of artificial intelligence alone is significant and growing due to the energy required to train AI models and power the data centers that house them. The statistics on equivalent energy usage compared to using AI is actually slightly staggering when you think about how non-impactful it feels to ask it something.
