The Three Musketeers
by Alexandre Dumas
Wow! Some classics are classics for a reason. I was worried it might be a tiresome slog, one only finished out of duty rather than pleasure, but this is quite the swashbuckling, intrigue. Funny, heartfelt, harrowing with a great villain. Most adaptations focus on Richlieu as the villain of the Musketeers, and to an extent, he is, but Milady is a much more formidable foe. There are moments that drag a bit (the six or seven chapters on Milady's imprisonment could have been condensed) but when it soars it really soars. Each character is distinct and I was never lost as to who was who or where their loyalties lay. I especially recommend this Audiobook version read by John Lee. He adds great depth to the characters and humor to the tale.
