This was a solid YA read that feels truly geared toward a younger audience! I def would have loved it when I was a teen. The magic system was simple but distinct across the elements, and the plot flowed well, building nicely toward the ending. I enjoyed Blaze as a main character. She’s sheltered and naive in ways that felt believable, and while the love triangle wasn’t really a triangle (which I didn’t mind!), the twist, though a bit predictable, was still well-executed.
I did wish for more action in the competition aspect, as much of the book felt like Blaze attending banquets or waiting for something to happen which was a little underwhelming for a royal trial setting. Still, certain characters like her twin brother Flint really stood out, and it was sweet to watch Blaze begin forming real friendships for the first time. Her ignorance around the empire’s social hierarchy and use of harmful language was uncomfortable but felt like an intentional setup for future growth, something I’m hoping to see developed further. Despite its flaws, the pacing kept me hooked, and I’ll definitely be picking up book two to follow Blaze’s journey.
