The Mitten
by Jan Brett
The Mitten is a story of a young boy who begs his grandmother to make him snow white mittens. She at first refuses because she says he will lose but gives in to his request. The first day he is out with his mittens, he drops one in the snow. Slowly, animals begin to find the mitten and push their way inside to stay warm. Even a bear snuggles inside the mitten! I enjoyed this picture book and I think that students would enjoy it as well. The repetitiveness of the animals huddling inside the mitten I think would stand out to them as well as make them laugh (whoever heard of a owl, badger, rabbit and mole all in a mitten together?). The illustrations are really beautiful and the author does a good job of making the characters and animals very realistic but non-threatening at the same time. The end of the book could make children laugh too because the last illustration is the grandmother holding a large stretched out mitten and a small normal sized mitten. I would recommend this for ages K-3.
