I read this book because, one it's right up my alley, but also because all the turmoil surrounding the publication. When people say "No, don't read that book!" It just makes me want to read it more.
I knew a little of why the author felt pressured to remove this book from publication, but I wanted to have a clear and open mind while reading, so I didn't look too much into it. Honestly if someone hadn't mentioned all the slave stuff and similarities of history and other books, I wouldn't have noticed.
Having said all that, I loved this book. It was unique, interesting, heart breaking, action packed, and just all around captivating. The last 100 pages I found myself yelling and whooping at the characters (scaring my cats more than once). I even caught myself fist pumping a couple of times. I found myself relating to the main character a lot. She is told she is a monster so much that she believes it herself. All the main characters were broken in some way or another and it was kind of incredible to experience their journey of self worth with them. I really hope this book gets published because I want to read the second one!
