Funny Story by Emily Henry

emotional funny lighthearted fast-paced

4.0

This is my favorite Emily Henry book, and I absolutely adore the main characters, especially Daphne. Her realistic portrayal captivated me, as her life experiences deeply influence her personality and interactions with others. Daphne's transformation is gradual and believable, showing subtle changes as the story progresses, which I find essential in a book with strong character development. This novel offers insightful reflections that make you ponder your own life, blending lighthearted entertainment with thoughtful moments.

Daphne always cherished the way her fiancé, Peter, told their story—how they met on a blustery day, fell in love over an errant hat, and moved back to his lakeside hometown to start their life together. He was a master storyteller until he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend, Petra.

This revelation leaves Daphne stranded in picturesque Waning Bay, Michigan, without friends or family but with a dream job as a children’s librarian that barely pays the bills. In her predicament, she proposes becoming roommates with the only person who might understand her situation: Petra’s ex, Miles Nowak.

Miles is scruffy and chaotic, finding solace in heartbreak love ballads, a stark contrast to the practical and buttoned-up Daphne. Her coworkers even joke that she must be in the FBI or witness protection because they know so little about her. Initially, Daphne and Miles avoid each other, but as they drown their sorrows together, they form a tentative friendship and hatch a plan. If their plan involves posting misleading photos of their summer adventures, who could blame them?
