The Naked and the Dead by Norman Mailer

4.0

Mailer's writing aged poorly in a few ways, namely the fact that writing anything from an anti-Semitic or sexist perspective today is completely shunned. Indeed, most of the reviews of this seem to focus on that (or even the inability of the reader to finish the book).

To me, it was an excellent book. The prose was beautiful at times, and while the cast of characters was wide, it felt complete somehow. Some of the descriptions were truly beautiful and terrifying, and the small battles of will between Hearn and Cummings were subtle and beautiful. Oddly enough, the subtlety of action in those tense scenes reminded me more of the works of Kawabata than anything.

Would recommend to anyone who can read objectively, or enjoys a nice grim war story. Especially for fans of Band of Brothers: The Pacific.
