There There by Tommy Orange

4.0

There's so much I loved about this book: That it's set in Oakland, and I can relate to many of the local references, the separate stories that all weave together, the glimpse into modern day urban Native American life, the can't-put-it-down pacing of the book toward its climax. It's like a cross between Yaa Gyasi's Homegoing and Junot Diaz's This is How you Lose Her.
But I didn't find the writing quite as spectacular as Gyasi or Diaz. I also don't love when writers are so didactic that they spell out their lessons for me in dialogue.
