The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

fast-paced

5.0

This book has left me shattered. I desperately want my own copy so I can annotate it and reread it as many times as possible. It's gripping, with heartbreaking twists and turns that sometimes you felt coming, sometimes not. It's hard to say which ones were more devastating. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo has so much more substance than I expected and doesn't shy away from the complexities of gray area. You are left with the idea to craft your own view of each character, no moment being implicitly good or bad. Whenever an action begged the question "would you do the same?" the answer was always stark: I don't know, and I will never know. I love when I am left with complex characters who I neither simply hate nor love, because it feels so resoundingly human. While I was reading I felt sucked in and forgot the world around me. That is no small accomplishment, and I love this book all the more for it. Maybe, once I'm older, I'll re-read it and find new opinions through life experiences. I hope I will.
