On the Edge by Ilona Andrews

Good

In this book we meet Rose Drayton, an impoverished twenty something living in “The Edge”, a borderland world between the magical “The Weird” and the non magical “The Broken”. (Points here for the clever use of “Weird” to name the magical world, and bending the rules of Urban Fantasy/Fantasy to create a mingling of the two!)
Rose is responsible for raising her two young brothers, George (necromancer) and Jack (changeling/shifter), and is gifted in the strength of her “flash” (magical lightning). That same strength had lead her to have multiple kidnapping attempts made against her, which means she is not instantly trusting upon meeting Declan Camarine, an Earl from the Weird who make his way into the Edge for unknown reasons.
Suddenly creatures are prowling through the Edge, killing people, and it’s down to Rose and Declan to stop them.

This was a re-read for me, since I hadn’t read the book since it came out- and it was prompted by the fact that I suddenly discovered that certain side characters from the Innkeeper Chronicles just so happened to be in *this* series. So yes, here you get to meet baby (well young) Jack and George, long before they’re the grown men arbitrating things in Dina’s Inn!
That gave a little extra enjoyment to this story for me, even though I thoroughly enjoy pretty much all of the Ilona Andrews books out there, even if it has been an age since I read it.
This has all the usual things one can expect from this talented team; action, adventure, romance, jokes… all in all a good, solid fantasy read introducing an intriguing world.
Recommended for contemporary fantasy lovers.
