The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories by Tim Burton

5.0

‘The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories’ is an illustrated poetry collection by Tim Burton. To be honest, before I picked up this little book at a book fair, I wasn’t even the biggest fan of Tim Burton. (Not to say that I didn’t like his work, I just wasn’t a hardcore fan waiting for every movie he would bring out.) So I read this collection, not as a Tim Burton fangirl, but as a girl who likes poetry and was amazed by the beautiful illustrations in this book.

I was never zo surprised by a poetry collection. I went in with no expectations at all, but ‘The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories’ conquered a really special place in my heart. The poems were easy to read. They made me sad, in a way, yet I was smiling all the way through. All of the poems were dark, lugubrious, but yet they had this kind of weirdness that made them heartwarming in some kind of way.

And the illustrations – don’t get me started on them. I never thought about Tim Burton that much, but the illustrations in this book made me realize I really, really like his art style. It’s so unique and absolutely stunning!

Definitely a poetry collection I would recommend to anybody!
