The Greatest Thing by Sarah Winifred Searle

4.0

This was an impactful story about a girl growing up and feeling outside of everything. It was incredible how much I related to Winifred. Her two best friends have just moved away and she's starting school with no social circle. She quickly meets two new artistic friends and is invited to join an old acquaintance's circle too. She navigates them warily, filled with self-doubt and self-loathing and teeters on the edge of an eating disorder.

I liked that the ending is so realistic; it's not a particularly happy ending, but not a bad one. People grow up and grow apart and grow into themselves. I actually liked that April confronted Win about her eating disorder even if it was the start of the end of their friendship. I hoped that all of them were happier now.

I feel like this would do well with high schoolers questioning themselves. For those who don't know what they're doing in life. I really liked it.
