Unlike the first book in this series, the TV adaptation of A CLASH OF KINGS varies pretty widely from its source. The book expounds upon the burgeoning war of succession that began at the end of A GAME OF THRONES and enriches it. The prose is elegant and brisk, covering huge swaths of territory in only (I know, I know) 800 or so pages. The biggest development, though, is the underlying magic of Martin's world, which is farther forward in the first book (and the TV show). More than that I hesitate to say, but I'm eager to start the next one.
