Choujin X, Vol. 1
by Sui Ishida
I'm a fan of Ishida's Tokyo Ghoul, so whwen I'd seen that there was a new series, also monster-based, I knew I had to read it! In this universe, we meet Tokio and Azuma, best friends who volunteer to clean up a plane crash wreckage caused by what they think is a Choujin, a humanesque monster who can transform and use untold of powers--usually for malevolent purposes. When investigating, they come face to face with a Choujin and Tokio must inject himself with Choujin blood...or die. Always the runt of the friendship, he is at a loss of what to do with his powers or control them. And when other Choujin start coming after him, he realizes that it's best for him to learn how to manage himself and quick.
Choujin X got off to a little bit of a slow start for me. Similar to Tokyo Ghoul, we're introduced to a high schooler whose life changes in one night. I know that the first volumes--and first arcs--are largely expository, so it understandably is leaving out plenty of information to later be explained. Maybe it was the pacing that didn't quite do it for me, or maybe it felt so similar to TG that I felt a little underwhelmed, but I still am looking forward to the next volume!
