bucyte 's review for:
Anatomy of a Scandal
by Sarah Vaughan
Unknowingly picked up a book about a compromised MP in the days leading up to the actual PM resigning. Life imitates art or something...?
Anatomy of a Scandal is a solid modern day drama. It invites for a discussion on power and accountability: can these two co-exist? What would it take for a her to prevail in a he-said - she-said situation?
I enjoyed the way the author wrote about the court proceedings and the crime in question. It was straight forward and appropriately harsh. However, I did not appreciate the switching of the viewpoint at the turn of every chapter. Following the story from the perspectives of everyone involved left no room for curiosity as all blanks were filled in sooner than I wonder about them. Also, the character developments are wild. By the end of the novel, all the female characters are essentially the opposites of what they started like. Perhaps too drastic a change to be whole-heartedly believed.
