The Darkest Night
by Gena Showalter
Paranormal stories are fairly popular, paranormal romances are insanely successful, and paranormal romance series are a dime a dozen. The paranormal genre in general, and romance series specifically, are more common than the cold.
But good paranormal romance series are rather rare, and overwhelmingly addictively awesome PNR series are downright impossible to find!
Until now.
I used to think that the only two overtly amazing series on the market were Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark-Hunter series and JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series.
Now there’s a new author and series I can add to the list; Gena Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld.
The Darkest Night is absolutely, positively one of the best novels I have read in a long, long time. The writing displayed by Showalter, first off, is overwhelmingly good, and that in and of itself is worth endless pages of praise. However, what makes this book so grandly wonderful is the characters!
I am absolutely in love with Maddox and Ashlyn! Their story was so powerful, so visceral and passionate, so damned emotional that I was grabbed by the collar and sucked into the story to a level that was as extreme as it was unexpected.
The plot, too, was fascinating. So different. So unusual! With paranormal romance series selling like hotcakes anymore, one would think discovering new story lines would be an impossibility, but Showalter proves otherwise! This book took so many various turns and reroutes that I was left constantly surprised and entertained. The emotion of the characters combined with the plot, too, is yet another reason I am absolutely in love with the series in general, and the book specifically.
I laughed! I cried! I downright had a geek-gasm over every single Lord in the book that I am as enthralled with their appearance in this story as I was in love with the primary plot!
Lastly, the pacing in this novel, too, was very interesting and unique, written in a way that is both quick and yet drawn out. The scenes in the book were so dynamic and edgy that I’m literally frantic to begin the next installment to this series!
