Pretty Little Liars
by Sara Shepard
I know the TV show like the back of my hand, so was interested to see how this differs to the insane, messy, yet entertaining series. For one thing, it has the exact same pitfalls: revoltingly inappropriate relationships that the book frames glamourously, soaking up way too many pages/screen time. The most interesting parts of the story are padded out with romance that for the most part is dull. Emily is the exception, because there's actual interesting conflict there and she seems like a real human being in her romantic life.
It's easy to see why the show condensed basically this whole book into the pilot of the show, because this teases better story to come and by the end I could definitely feel that it was the beginning chapter in this saga.
While I didn't love it, I'm interested to see where it goes and am hoping the second book has more of the bite that this first entry occasionally brought to the table. It's incredibly juicy, and the mystery is compelling, after all.
