Sunshine by Robin McKinley

I'm not sure how to rate this. It's a bit post-apocalypse plus vampires, but the writing style is more literary than that description would imply. It's definitely not romance or romantasy.

I really enjoyed the world building in this and wanting to learn more about the history, politics and rules drew me through most of the book.

The writing often drifts into almost feeling surreal and very in the MC's head instead of being in the action. It made it hard to have the characters or the plot draw me in the way they normally would.  One could argue this is appropriate as it shows how wild the events are compared to the MC's previous life and represents dissociation as a trauma response for the main character. You could also argue it needed better editing.

I think I would have enjoyed it more if the world and plot were written in more of an Ilona Andrews style and as a series so there was more time to unpack everything. But that's just personal preference.
