Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

challenging emotional medium-paced

4.75

I loved the rich imagery and emotions hidden underneath the surface of the main protagonist, a Nigerian teenager Kambili. She is raised with a strict and physically abusive  father who is spiritually and financially generous to their community. Her pain is hidden beneath the surface as others revere him as a leader. Their affluent and privileged but solemn life is a contrast to that of her aunt (dad’s sister) who has a small home with limited plumbing and electricity but full of laughter and joy.
